WHY: Marked by the 10th anniversary of Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), the “1st Education for Sustainable Development Forum” has been jointly held by ILEAD accompanied with many higher education and research institutions (e.g. Soochow University, Suzhou Graduate School of Renmin University of China) located in SIP Dushu Lake Higher Education Town. The forum aims to respond to the call from the United Nation: promoting education for sustainable development, attracting more practitioners in universities and higher education to participate in the research by building up the first communication platform for this topic in Chinese higher education sector. Thus, related educational philosophies can be popularized and relevant teaching methods could be innovated and explored further.
The education purpose of XJTLU is to turn the “common” students to the “outstanding” global citizens. One of the important quality of global citizens is to have the curiosity and responsibility to the future world and to seek the dynamic balance needed by the sustainable development during the ongoing exploration. “Sustainability Literacy “has been regarded as the important part for general education and integrated in the discipline development in XJTLU. However, both the perspective and methodology would vary of different disciplines concerning the philosophies of education for sustainable development. Therefore, how to implement the education for sustainable development in higher education sector more effectively?
