Annual Meeting introduction

Since the 19th CPC National Congress, the state has proposed a further strategy of "Masses to pioneer and thousands to innovate" and has made upsurge of innovation and entrepreneurship reform in higher education. Governments at all levels and colleges and universities have implemented a series of policies and measures to settle innovation and entrepreneurship education so as to provide continuous sources of intellectual support for building an innovative country. Under the impact of a series of subversive technologies, such as the Internet revolution and artificial intelligence, it will be more dependent for human development on innovation in the era of knowledge economy, so innovation spirit has become an important historical mission for education. As the frontier of talent cultivation, it is evidently important to enhance the cultivation of university students' innovation and entrepreneurship. As for how to cultivate students' pioneering spirit, it becomes a key issue for teachers and teaching managers. In particular, how universities cultivate students' critical thinking, problem awareness and problem-solving capability which is a critical quality and ability for innovation and entrepreneurship. So it is a problem that must be thought over and explored domestically and even globally.

Research-led education was initiated in such circumstances which can become an important concept and methodology for cultivating students’ ability and entrepreneurial spirit. Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University has explored research-led education in the past decade and an education system has been formed. In the model of research-led education, the value of the class will not only provide "knowledge", but also to replace the traditional spoon-fed learning for the research-led learning, and guide students to start search actively and learn knowledge related to problems and phenomena under the guidance of teachers to integrate knowledge, to explain phenomena or to find solutions to problems from the realistic problems and phenomena. Therefore, research oriented education become an educational model for cultivating students' curiosity to discover problems, innovative and critical thinking for problems, and finally form the education model through team cooperation and communication. This is just the key aspect of innovation and entrepreneurship education improving students' ability.

The Annual Conference is aimed at gathering together educators to make a further discussion on how university education and teaching can enhance students’ innovative spirit. The theme of the Annual Conference is “Forming students’ entrepreneurial and innovative spirit through research-led education”. Here we invite domestic and foreign universities leaders, teaching administrators and teachers to reflect the following topics:

1. How can universities improve students’ ability to start businesses and to make innovations through research-led education? Specifically including: 

  • How to stimulate students’ curiosity and insight into the issues of social realities through innovations of guidance in class, consequent motivation to let student find the starting point for innovation and entrepreneurship?

  • How can classroom teaching in university improve students’ problem-solving ability, especially the ability to solve and evaluate problems?

  • How can classroom teaching in university develop students’ ability to solve practical problems through teamwork?

  • How can classroom teaching in university train the students’ ability to criticize the existing knowledge system for particular issue?

2. How to improve the students’ ability and entrepreneurial and innovative spirit through the symbiosis of industry and educational?

Three workshops in parallel

Workshop I:  Applying research-led teaching approach in university class

In the Internet era, the value of college education must be reassessed and university teachers need readjust the teaching method and adopt a student-centered approach to better support students’ learning and growth. This workshop will focus on how teachers can help participants develop a better understanding of “student-centered” by sharing with them through hands-on activities and round table discussion, and enlighten participants to revise its teaching concept and methods from current difficult situation by sharing actual case with them.

Key topics:

  • Introduction of research-led learning and teaching and its practice across XJTLU 

  • Seminar discussion of the research-led education in terms of curriculum design and activities

  • Share of research-led teaching practice based on real classroom activities in XJTLU

Benefits:

  • To know the reform trend of global higher education using the case of the “student-centered” teaching in XJTLU

  • To know what the students’ demands are and how to practice the research-led learning that aligns with their cognitive development and learning habits

  • Hands-on experience of how to revise and improve their curriculum design

 

Workshop II:  Service-oriented Learning and Teaching Support

The development trend represented by globalization, knowledge economy and internet technology requires future talents to be able to tackle challenges in a UACC world. In order to respond to these requirement talent cultivation of module of universities must go beyond knowledge dissemination. Accordingly, management and supporting system needs to transform from administration and controlling to service and support centredness. This workshop aims to explore how management and supporting system contribute to university learning and teaching reform and innovation further to facilitate students learning and growth through in-depth discussion of education  philosophy, objective, process, strategy, and roles and responsibilities. 

Key topics:

  • Rethinking the challenges and features of university management and supporting system

  • Experiencing five aspects of learning and teaching transformation through role play and scenario analysis

  • Exploring how management and supporting system contribute to learning and teaching reform and innovation

Benefits:

  • Enhance the awareness and understanding the role and value as university academic service staff.

  • Complete the self-assessment of university’s management and supporting system. Critically analyze current

  • Brainstorming, exploring how teaching management supports university transformation and transformation from the perspective of idea, goal, process, means and role respectively 

  • In practice, we should focus on promoting students' learning and growth to improve the specialization of teaching management, and help promote the university transformation

 

Workshop  III: University teaching with English as the medium of instruction (EMI)   

With the further development of global cooperation and communication, all English teaching is the objective requirement of the internationalization trend of higher education in China. It is required that talents in our colleges and universities can think in foreign language and master advanced knowledge with foreign languages. As the continuous influx of high-quality educational resources abroad, teaching with EMI has put forward higher requirements for teachers and students, and it needs continuous exploration and progress in practice. The workshop will discuss the basic skills of using all English teaching and how to improve on the "student centered" teaching concept through a round table discussion, case analysis and other ways.

  • Situation and challenges faced by courses taught with EMI in China’s universities

  • Quality assurance of teaching with EMI in the classroom

  • The development and future of teaching with EMI in Chinese universities

  • From the perspective of student-centered active learning to discuss about the responsibilities of students and teachers, the effective selection and use of teaching methods and materials, and quality assurance of teaching with EMI

Opening of the forum and keynote speech

At present, our country has entered the era characterized by "masses to pioneer and thousands to innovate", and the innovation and entrepreneurship education has become an important breakthrough in deepening the reform of higher education in China. As the birthplace of innovation and entrepreneurship, the innovation and entrepreneurship education in colleges and universities are faced with the need of transformation. Exploring new method, new path and new mode has become an important problem to be solved in the current innovation and entrepreneurship education in colleges and universities. How to integrate the innovation and entrepreneurship education into the existing higher education framework and learn from the development experience of well-known universities at home and abroad can improve the innovative consciousness and entrepreneurial ability of the students through the docking of social resources, the improvement of practical teaching, the cooperation with the experts from outside the school and the cultivation of the innovative campus culture.

Forum Session I: Sustainable development of Teacher Development Center

The effective development of innovation and entrepreneurship education is inseparable from qualified teachers. The improvement of teachers' teaching ability, educational ability and innovation and development ability is inseparable from the guidance and support of university teachers' development center. It is an urgent problem to be solved by the current university teacher development center as to how to have talents be trained in higher education development center professionally and be supported systematically and procedurally and to form a sustainable evaluation and development plan, This forum is devoted to exploring the development model and practice system of university teachers in combination with experts at home and abroad, in order to provide useful reference for promoting the development of innovation and entrepreneurship in colleges and universities.

Topic:  Promoting sustainable development capability of teacher development center to improve educational level of innovation and Entrepreneurship 

     

Forum Session II:  Symbiosis of industry and educational sector

China's economic development has now entered a new normalization, Innovation driven is the core demand of the supply side reform, and the integration of production and education is the key to colleges and universities reform. The innovation and Entrepreneurship of colleges and universities are integrated into the regional economic development, combined with the training mode of innovation talents in the industry demand, and that the cooperation and international exchange with famous enterprises is the focus developing innovation and entrepreneurship education of colleges and universities. The forum hopes to discuss with educators and industry celebrities: How to average up  the education of innovation and entrepreneurship by deep fusion of production and teaching.

XJTLU National University Teaching Innovation Competition 2018 Final & Award Ceremony

The XJTLU National University Teaching Innovation Competition, sponsored by XJTLU, contracted by Institute of Leadership and Education Advanced Development , and supported by Macao Tong Chai  Charity Association, which aims to discover and reward a batch of "student centered" teachers in colleges and universities to spread the innovation of “student-centered” teaching reform, to build a platform for sharing, exchanging and learning for teachers who are devoted to innovation teaching, and thus promoting the reform of higher education in China.

XJTLU national university teaching innovation competition utilizes the students’ learning experiences to enhance concern as the core concentrated. The contest includes innovative practice cases from different universities across the country, covering disciplines such as science and technology, economics and management, literature and art, medicine and other disciplines. The teachers and teacher teams in the final are from 985 project, private colleges or Chinese and foreign cooperative institutions or projects. They all focus on the students' learning experience and growth. They meet the multiple challenges in the first line of teaching and put forward their own innovative solutions from different angles.
