Annual Conference for Higher Education Innovation 2016
The Annual Conference for Higher Education Innovation 2016 opened on 20th May at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University as the first official event of the University’s 10th anniversary celebrations.
More than 200 participants from Mainland China, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Australia and Japan attended the conference for in-depth discussions on approaches to educational reform, to exchange experiences of reform practice, as well as to build collaboration opportunities. Many expressed their congratulations to the University for its milestone anniversary year.
The conference, which continues through to Sunday 22 May, includes a series of activities such as the XJTLU education forum, the Wisdom-Lake Internationalisation Summit of Higher Education 2016, and teaching workshops and training.
1st XJTLU National Teaching Innovation Award was held successfully
XJTLU National University Teaching Innovation Award intends to discover and reward a group of teachers from higher education institutions who insist of "Student-centered Education". The award has been successfully opened at 7th March, around 60 teaching faculties from 23 Chinese universities participated in it. During three rounds of selection, Bing Chen and Hai-Ning Liang from XJTLU, Xi Wan from Chongqing University of Science & Technology, Sam Yu from School of Overseas Education, Soochow University and Zhipan Lin from Gengdan Institute of Beijing University of Technology came to the final onsite presentation and review session. Finally, Xi Wan from Chongqing University of Science & Technology wined the first prize: Annual Teaching Innovation Prize. The other four candidates wined the‘Annual Teaching Innovation Nomination Prize’ and the other 15 candidates wined the ‘Annual Teaching Innovation Entrant Prize’. At the same time, we also set organizational prize for those universities which have great contribution to teaching innovation: East China University of Science And Technology achieved the Prize of Innovation Teaching Organization, Southwest Jiaotong University and XJTLU achieved the Prize of Outstanding Contribution to Teaching Innovation.
“Education Innovation Excellence Programme"released
Education Innovation Excellence Programme was officially launched on May 20, 2016 during Annual Conference of Higher Education Innovation 2016. Dr. Xiaojun Zhang, Deputy Director of Institute of Leadership and Education Advanced Development, introduced the strategy and action plan of the programme. Prof Dongping Yang as representative of Advisory Board of the programme, Dr. Bing Chen as representative of XJTLU National University Teaching Innovation Award, Prof Xiaoliang Ding as representative of members of the programme together with Prof Youmin Xi, Executive President of XJTLU unveiled the programme. Education Innovation Excellence Programme, proposed by Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, aims to offer higher education practitioners with extensive platform of communication, gather the people who have interest in higher education reform and innovation. Benefits working enhancement and life-long professional development of practitioners in higher education, promotes the reform and transition of Higher Education both at home and abroad.
“Education Innovation Excellence Plan” Membership Project officially launched

Inauguration of Advisory Board and 1st plenary meeting of Education Innovation Excellence Programme
Advisory Board of ‘Education Innovation Excellence Programme’ was officially set up on May 19 while 1st plenary meeting was held. Hosting by Youmin Xi, Executive President of XJTLU, the board members including Kelvin Everest, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of University of Liverpool, Peigen Li, member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Guang Xi, Vice President of Xi’an Jiaotong University, Dongping Yang, Dean of 21st Century Education Research Institute, Zhijian Wu, Head of Department of Mathematics Sciences in University of Nevada, special guests including Daren Huang, former president of Sun Yat-Sen University, Xiaoliang Ding, Executive Vice President of Gengdan Institute of Beijing University of Technology, and the representatives from Guangming Daily and China Machine PRESS attended the meeting. The panel reviewed article of Advisory Board, and provided guidance and suggestions on strategy and action plan of ‘Education Innovation Excellence Programme’. Advisory Board is non-profitable and it serves as a platform and bond for communication between the executive team of Education Innovation Excellence Programme and board members. It provides strategic guidance and support for promoting education reform of China and education development of the world.
“Students- Centered University System Handbook" first released
20th May on Annual Conference for Higher Education Innovation, ILEAD first released “Students- Centered University System Handbook”. At present Higher Education in the world is undergoing a profound reform of “Student-Centered” education model in order to subvert “Teacher-Centered” education model and knowledge-led teaching methodology since industrial revolution. ILEAD is established to tackle these challenges though cutting-edge research into constraints of current higher education reform and future university based on XJTLU and other institutes’ education exploration. ILEAD is committed to enhance its influence by promoting and helping to establish student-centered education system among universities that share the same vision. “Students-Centered University System Handbook” was released by kinds of channels such as online and paper copy. It will be released online version in September 2016 and will be published paper version in 2017.

"Research-led Learning and Teaching Training Programme" is upcoming in August
Research-led learning and teaching training: Nowadays higher education sector is facing serious challenges from globalization, knowledge-based economy, and information technology advancement in which knowledge can be accessed easier in terms of cheap massive online courses resources, and the traditional role of university such as knowledge dissemination is weakening. As a result, universities all over the world are exploring and re-defining the value and concept of higher education of new era, and research-led teaching, as an approach to develop their critical thinking and problem solving skills by changing students learning process and behavior and increasing engagement. However, there is much debate about what research-led teaching is, what is its core value to students, how to practice this approach in different disciplines with diverse class size, and how to design the research-led teaching activities to make sure they are suitable for Chinese students. You’re welcomed to join us at later Augest to explore the core objectives, strategies, and best practices of implementing the research-led teaching approach, and the challenges and difficulties with regards to different disciplines, and classroom sizes, eventually to disseminate this as a common practice both in XJTLU and among other Chinese universities to enhance students’ active learning experience.
"Sustainable Development of Sino-foreign Cooperative Education" training programme launched officially
Sino-foreign cooperative education is initiated to respond to higher education internationalization based on the practical exploration of Dushu Lake Science and Education Innovation District and Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University aiming to further explore how to introduce overseas education resource, promote innovations in talent cultivation model, and university management system, to enhance learning and sharing of best practice so as to build up a leadership team of cutting edge ideology and capability, and improve participating universities’ international competitiveness. Moreover, XJTLU will systematically elaborate on its own exploration in terms of program development, faculty development, and education quality assurance system, assist to establish program structure that integrates the strength and uniqueness of both Eastern and Western education model, set up a comprehensive standards and process of faculty recruiting and development, and build up the quality assurance system that combines best practice of both the East and the West ultimately to improve learning and teaching.
